Get to know Buena Park
Buena Park is Uptown's quiet lakefront corner: about half a square mile of tree-lined streets between Irving Park Road and Montrose Avenue, running from Graceland Cemetery east to the lake.
People move here to live next to Montrose Harbor and the lakefront for less than the neighborhoods just south. It was laid out in the 1890s as a suburb of fine homes, and the historic architecture is still the first thing you notice.
Day to day, the side streets stay calm. Wrigley Field is a walk south, Uptown's music venues are a walk north, and the Red Line is at both ends.
Why People Love Buena Park
The people who know Buena Park best describe it the same way: a calm, historic pocket with the lake at the end of the block.
The lakefront is across the street. Marine Drive looks out over Montrose Harbor and the Marovitz Golf Course, with the Lakefront Trail, Montrose Beach and its bird sanctuary a short walk beyond.
The architecture is the scenery. A lifelong resident describes walking east on Buena Avenue under a canopy of trees framing George Maher's Prairie-style homes.
It's quiet, but never far. The side streets are residential, yet Wrigley Field, Uptown's jazz clubs and concert halls, and Argyle Street's restaurants are all within reach. Learn more about the neighborhoods of Uptown here.
There's a real corner bar and a real bakery. Locals point to The Bar on Buena as the neighborhood bar you hope for, and Klein's Bakery as the morning stop.
The neighbors throw a music festival. Every spring, PorchFest turns porches, courtyards and backyards across Buena Park into stages for an afternoon of live local music.
Getting around is easy. The Sheridan and Wilson Red Line stops bracket the neighborhood and reach downtown in under 20 minutes, and the Broadway, Clark and Sheridan buses run through it.

What to do in Buena Park
In Buena Park, most days end up at the lake, and most evenings end up on Broadway.
Start with coffee and a pastry at Klein's Bakery & Cafe at Broadway and Buena. Then walk east to the water. Montrose Harbor is lined with boats, and the Lakefront Trail runs past the golf course toward Cricket Hill, where kites fly on breezy days.
Keep going to Montrose Point. The bird sanctuary's "Magic Hedge" draws birders from all over the region, and more than 300 species have been recorded there. Montrose Beach sits next door, with a fenced area at its west end where dogs can run off leash.
Back in the neighborhood, Buena Circle Park hosts summer concerts next to a dog-friendly area. Graceland Cemetery, the neighborhood's western edge, doubles as one of the city's most beautiful walks, with the graves of famous Chicagoans under old trees.
Evenings start at The Bar on Buena, which has a patio, a long beer list and a Monday burger special. From there, Uptown Square is a short walk north: jazz at the Green Mill, a show at the Aragon or the Riviera, or dinner on Argyle Street. On a nice summer afternoon you can also walk south to Wrigley Field.
Housing Types & Architecture
Buena Park is mostly vintage condos and apartments, with a few blocks of grand historic houses mixed in.
The neighborhood began in the 1890s as a suburb of spacious homes. The early houses are Queen Anne and Romanesque, and the later ones are Prairie School and Classical Revival. When apartment buildings arrived in the early 1900s, they were designed to match, often wrapping around a landscaped courtyard instead of a front lawn.
That's most of what you'll find for sale today: condos in vintage courtyard and mid-rise buildings, many updated inside but keeping their original character. Along Marine Drive, high-rises add lake and harbor views and building amenities.
The showpiece is Hutchinson Street. Its 700 and 800 blocks are a Chicago Landmark District, one of the city's best collections of Prairie-style houses, including five by George W. Maher. Single-family homes and rowhouses elsewhere in the neighborhood are rare and draw attention when they list.
The whole neighborhood is a National Register historic district. That listing is an honor, but Hutchinson Street's city landmark status protects its houses from demolition.
The quick read: a strong fit if you want a vintage condo or a lakefront high-rise steps from the harbor, on quiet streets with history. A harder search if you need a single-family home or new construction.
