Get to know Logan Square

Logan Square is one of Chicago's most beautiful and lively neighborhoods: wide, tree-lined boulevards lined with greystones, anchored by an eagle-topped monument and surrounded by some of the city's best restaurants and bars. It sits on the Northwest Side, with Avondale to the north, Humboldt Park to the south and Bucktown to the east.

People move here for the combination of historic homes, green space and a creative, independent scene. Milwaukee Avenue brings coffee shops, boutiques, music venues and patios, while the boulevards stay calm and leafy a block away.

The neighborhood grew up in the late 1800s and early 1900s along Chicago's historic boulevard system. Its heart, where Logan and Kedzie boulevards meet Milwaukee Avenue, was recently rebuilt with a new pedestrian plaza, and in 2024 Time Out named Logan Square one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world.

Why People Love Logan Square

Residents and local business owners describe Logan Square as the best of both worlds: big-city energy with a small-town feel.

The boulevards are stunning. Logan, Kedzie, Palmer and Humboldt boulevards form one of the best-preserved stretches of Chicago's boulevard system, with greystones, mansions and green parkways.

Parks are everywhere. Logan Square Park around the Centennial Monument, Palmer Square Park and the 606 trail along the southern edge give residents room to run, read and relax outdoors.

The food and drink scene is a draw. Neighborhood institutions like Lula Cafe and Longman & Eagle sit alongside cozy wine bars, taquerias, breweries and dance spots.

Small businesses set the tone. Residents point to homey bars, independent boutiques, a vintage cinema and a video game museum, and say neighbors still stop to say hi.

Getting around is easy. The Blue Line stops at Logan Square and California, reaching downtown and O'Hare, and buses run on Milwaukee, Armitage, Fullerton and Diversey, with the Kennedy Expressway close by.

The farmers market is a weekly ritual. The Logan Square Farmers Market runs outdoors on Sundays from spring through fall and moves indoors for winter, one of the city's only year-round weekly markets.

What to do in Logan Square

In Logan Square, a perfect day starts on a trail and ends on a dance floor.

Start with a run on the 606 or a loop around Palmer Square Park, then grab coffee and a doughnut and settle onto a bench on Logan Boulevard with a book from City Lit. On Sundays, browse the farmers market for produce, pasta, pastries and flowers.

Afternoons are for wandering Milwaukee Avenue. Pop into Wolfbait & B-Girls for local designers, Pixie & The Boy for gifts and Steel Petal Press for letterpress cards, then check out the latest exhibit at Chicago Gamespace, a museum dedicated to video games.

Evenings can be designed to suit your mood. Book dinner at Lula Cafe or Longman & Eagle, grab a burger at Small Cheval, or catch an indie or cult film at the vintage Logan Theatre. Finish with a glass at Webster's Wine Bar or a late night dancing at Slippery Slope.

The new plaza by the Centennial Monument and the Logan Square Arts Festival and Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival keep the calendar full in warm months. Logan Square Preservation also runs walking tours of the neighborhood's history.

Housing Types & Architecture

Logan Square is a neighborhood of greystones and vintage flats, with single-family homes, workers cottages and newer condos mixed in.

The showpieces line the Logan Square Boulevards District, listed on the National Register in 1985 and designated a Chicago Landmark in 2005, with an extension along Humboldt Boulevard added in 2026. Built mostly between 1880 and 1930, the boulevards hold grand single-family homes and greystone two- and three-flats, and exterior changes need approval from the city's landmarks commission.

Off the boulevards, the side streets are filled with brick two- and three-flats, frame workers cottages and single-family homes. Many buyers live in one unit of a flat and rent the others, or convert a building into a larger single-family home.

Condos are common too, in converted vintage buildings and in newer buildings along Milwaukee Avenue and the main corridors, many with elevators, parking and roof decks.

The quick read: a strong fit if you want a greystone, a vintage flat or a condo near green space, the Blue Line and a great dining scene. There are better fits if you want a central location or easy access to the lake.
