Get to know River West

Noble Square is West Town's compact, quietly confident corner: a grid of vintage flats and tree-lined side streets between Wicker Park and River West. It runs roughly from Division Street south to Chicago Avenue, between Ashland Avenue and the Kennedy Expressway.

People move here for location without the scene. You can walk to Wicker Park's shops, eat your way down one of the city's best restaurant strips on Chicago Avenue, and reach the Loop in minutes on the Blue Line or the Kennedy.

The neighborhood takes its name from Noble Street and the square-shaped Eckhart Park at its center. It grew up as part of Chicago's historic Polish Downtown, and the domes of Holy Trinity and St. Boniface still rise over the rooftops.

Why People Love River West

Residents describe Noble Square as a calm pocket in the middle of everything.

It keeps its neighborhood feel. Longtime residents say that even as new buildings and businesses arrive, the side streets still feel residential and personal.

Chicago Avenue is a restaurant row. The stretch along the neighborhood's southern edge has become one of the city's most talked-about dining corridors, from Michelin-recognized kitchens to neighborhood favorites.

Eckhart Park is the backyard. The eight-acre park has an outdoor pool, a fieldhouse with a gym and fitness center, ball fields, a playground and a sledding hill in winter.

Everything is close. Residents call it extremely walkable, with groceries, coffee, independent shops and Wicker Park's nightlife a short stroll away.

Getting around is easy. Blue Line stops at Division and at Chicago Avenue bracket the neighborhood, buses run on Ashland, Division and Chicago, and the Kennedy Expressway runs along the eastern edge.

History is part of the streetscape. Polish Cathedral-style churches, the Polish Museum of America and century-old taverns give the blocks a sense of place you can't build new.

What to do in River West

In Noble Square, the best days start at Eckhart Park and end somewhere on Chicago Avenue.

Mornings begin with coffee at Standing Passengers or Mano Modern Café, or at Engine Coffee at the neighborhood's northern tip. In summer, swim laps at Eckhart Park's outdoor pool or catch a pickup game on its ball fields.

Afternoons are for wandering. Dig through vinyl at Dusty Groove on Ashland, browse the collections at the Polish Museum of America on Milwaukee Avenue, and stop at Roots & Culture, a contemporary art space on Chicago Avenue. Then step inside Holy Trinity, a 1906 Polish Cathedral-style church on Noble Street.

Evenings belong to Chicago Avenue. Book a table at one of the strip's acclaimed restaurants, or keep it casual with Italian comfort food at Oggi Trattoria. Finish with a drink at the Chipp Inn, a dive bar that dates to 1897, or dance at Beauty Bar.

In June, the Do Division Street Fest fills the neighborhood's northern edge with live music and local food.

Housing Types & Architecture

Noble Square is a vintage-flats neighborhood with modern condos woven in: three-flats, greystones and workers cottages share blocks with newer mid-rise buildings.

Vintage two- and three-flats are the backbone. Many date to the late 1800s and early 1900s, with tall ceilings, bay windows and original details, and they work well for buyers who want to live in one unit and rent the others.

Greystones and frame workers cottages add variety on the side streets, and a few turreted corner buildings give some blocks a storybook look.

Newer condo buildings, many with elevators, parking and rooftop decks with skyline views, have filled in along the main streets in recent decades. You'll also find loft conversions and a 1970s cooperative near Milwaukee Avenue.

The quick read: a strong fit if you want a vintage flat or a modern condo in a walkable, central neighborhood with a great park. A harder search if you want a big yard or a single-family home on a quiet, wide lot.
